Urban Renewal Needs a Renewal:
This section of the city where Congress Street meets Hamilton Street and Federal Streets is my least favorite in the community. It could just as easily be one of the nicer sections off Broadway especially since its in such close proximity to the beautiful Visitors Center building.
It is no good to any community to eliminate streets for reasons that are not essential. Severing the connectivity of a street is not pedestrian friendly and has a negative effect on the psyche. That section of town is suffering as a result of urban renewal.
That brings me to my next point, the current planning board should not approve any future project there unless Federal Street is made whole again. The players on current planning board are as follows:
Cliff Van Wagner
The Planning Boards next meeting is JULY 10th, 2013 at 7:00pm
I do encourage you to attend and/or write letters regarding this issue. I do realize Don Greene of DCG enterprises is constructing a six-story hotel here. (anything would look better here at this point in the game)
Hopefully the economic pressure will push the CVS out (the parking lot is a non-sensical disaster from start to finish) and hopefully the other eyesore called Wendy's will be next on the chopping block. (Wendy's would be better suited for South Broadway and the CVS might be better suited next to the up and coming mental health clinic on South Broadway also since everyone leaving there will have to fill their prescription. Am I the only person connecting all the dots here? Do the city planners have any idea what they are doing to this city?
I will be talking about this issue and other issues on MULDOON at noon tomorrow on WSPN Skidmore radio, 91.1 F.M.
