Pampered and Mentally Deranged White Boys:

Self-denial and delusional behavior is distressing to watch but it does provide endless writing material. Not only is male violence out of control but I can't help but notice that many of the murderers of the most recent gun rampages are not only mentally ill but have other similarities as well: They are WHITE, UPPER MIDDLE CLASS, SUBURBAN and rather pampered.

Lets do a little recap, shall we?

Christopher Porco: You know how the stereotype goes?: They must have come from 'bad homes' or they must have been 'abused'. Nonsense. Chris Porco DID NOT come from a bad home. The only things his parents were guilty of is over indulging him and probably put their foot down a little too late in the game.

Kip Kinkle: The kid from Oregon who killed his well-respected high school teaching parents. He came from an upper middle class home, stable environment and killed his parents and students and teachers at his high school.

Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris: Same thing, came from good homes. Intended on bombing their school but the bomb didn't detonate as they had expected so they had to get out of the car and go into the school and shoot up the place themselves.

The questions we should be asking ourselves as a nation:

  • How is it that America is producing so many mentally ill males in this country?
  • How the hell are these mentally unstable males getting a hold of firearms?

  • How is that so many people who suffer from mental illness, Aspergers, autism, and other disabilities are overwhelmingly male?
  •  Are we allowing this behavior because they are white males?
  • How is it that we have not produced high quality men in this country since the baby-boomer generation?
  • Why are so many males in this lacking in life skills unlike in previous generations? Do we believe that adult males do not need to know how to use a coffee maker, washing machine and other household appliances?
  • Are we going to stop with the permissive parenting and political correctness? It's clearly NOT working. (Kids should not be making the household decisions simply because many parents are too weak to set appropriate limits with their children)

I will not entertain the subject of gun control because all that will do is take away guns from those who are law abiding and that doesn't make sense.

We cannot tolerate this anti-social murderous behavior anymore. Enough is enough.

OK, Nancy, good subject to have opened. I will paraphrase a pertinent comment I heard someone offer the other day. The reason this mayhem isn't more common in the black community is that so many of their young men are in prison. Another factor is undiagnosed and/or untreated mental illness. 40 years ago, a lot of people were in state mental institutions. They have closed and the population is on the street, i.e in their homes. Sometimes with access to firearms. No one solution can eliminate 100% of the problem, but together, better control of gun sales (background checking), restrictions on magazines to sporting limits, more assertive mental health care, maybe less addictive video games, can all contribute. I have a right to drive my car, but I do not have a right to run stop lights. Public safety, in the context of individual constitutional rights, should be the goal. I do not see the justification that 20 six-year-olds should have given their lives so that you or I can keep an assault rifle in our homes.

" I will not entertain the subject of gun control because all that will do is take away guns from those who are law abiding and that doesn't make sense."

Are you aware that there is a law on the books RIGHT NOW in several states that people who are convicted of domestic violence cannot buy guns? i suppose that you believe that we should repeal this?

You are becoming too radical conservative for even Fox News! I believe that you need to stop being so inflammatory and start actually looking for solutions. i am saddened by your positions, which serve to place blame (in the wrong place) rather than try to help find solutions. "Won't entertain gun control" -- even though a WOMAN owned the guns that killed her and all those children-- get real!

Arthur: Must I remind you I don't watch any tv but I do find your analysis of me being too conservative for Fox news wildly amusing. LOL

I will change my mind (women have that tendency) and talk about gun control.

I must finish writing 2 more papers for my Constitutional Law class and I hope to be back on the blogosphere in short order.

But to answer your question, I believe that anyone who has committed a felony or committed domestic violence should not be allowed to own a firearm.

@Gordon: Thank you for your thoughtful commentary on this hot button issue. I think one of the reasons its not talked about it in the black community is blacks continue to kill blacks more often than not. Its not something white owned media cares too much about so those stories don't get a lot of press.

Re: Mental illnes, we have never handled mental illness well. We used to institutionalize them and then during the Reagan administration they were unceremoniously tossed onto the streets of America.

There is a lot more we could be doing. I cringe when I hear the phrase 'gun control' because our government is fond of taking everyone's rights away.

Much can be done to ensure we keep law breakers from ever obtaining firearms. We have a ways to go in this country but these kinds of massacres will continue unless we come up with a strategic plan that is fair and just.

No one who is mentally ill should have access to a firearm. No one who has committed a felony, an act of domestic violence and those who've had a restraining order against them should never have a firearm.

I would even go so far as to say anyone who has more than one DWI or DUI should not be able to obtain a firearm.

I am glad American is finally talking about this issue. Better late than never.

Wow. Did I really just read "the reason this mayhem isn't more common in the black community" on this blog?

Wow.

So let me ask this question: You have two faucets, each with a bucket beneath them. One is left on full-blast for 30 seconds and the other is left to drip for 30 hours. Which bucket is going to have more water in it? Or does it really matter, since both are going to have a substantial amount?

Well before you blow a brain cell thinking up a response, allow me to point out what is simply a sickening level of ignorance on display here: We have three cities within a half-hour drive of Saratoga Springs. Every year, there is gun violence in these three cities. Every year. And every year, someone is brutally murdered with a gun. Shot in the head at a convenience store. Shot on the way home from high school. Shot in the chest outside of a bar. Shot while hauling DJ equipment from a party. Shot with a stray bullet while siting on a stoop. Shot in a car at a traffic light. Shot walking home from a friends house after watching a football game. Shot selling an ounce of weed to someone. These are deaths, people. Most of them are black. Some of them are children.

And in every instance, the person who pulled the trigger was also black. Theses aren't people of privilege either. They are people of the inner city, where a handgun is never more than a few blocks and a handshake away. They come from broken families, often single-parent homes. They grow up on the streets and sling dope for spending cash. They run for gangs and then join them. They pack heat to protect themselves, to rob for more spending cash and to exact revenge whenever their egos have been trampled.

Their victims are a broad cross section of people. But the crucial reason no one here gives a shit about them is because most of them are from the inner city. And we EXPECT this sort of thing from there. Hearing about shots fired in Hamilton Hill or Arbor Hill is almost commonplace. Hearing about a murder in Schenectady, Albany or Troy is fodder for the back page unless the victim happens to be white. Their mugs or their life stories simply don't illicit the type of sympathy a white first-grader does in the media. So then to everyone in white bred Saratoga Springs, they don't exist. Their deaths aren't tragic and what the fuck, who cares about guns, because Lord knows guns couldn't be the problem.

I wonder what this nation would be like if we took the same approach to drunk driving. Alcohol doesn't kill people, drunk people don't kill people, and cars don't kill people, so what's the problem? Yeah, that's some great thinking there..

This whole post and the comments thereof are painfully myopic and trample on the graves of the dozens of gun violence victims we have right here in the Capital Region. It's a shame it takes a routing of an elementary school to drum up such talk about gun control, when the call for it has been coming from the ghetto for years. It's even more of a shame that we have people that are satisfied to point the finger and say it's all the evil maniacal doing of privileged white men.

thank you for your comment. I did say in my previous comment before yours that blacks usually kills blacks so it doesn't get a lot of press. You are right that the three communities surrounding saratoga lives with violent and extreme crime everyday and no one really seems to care. Sad, I know.

Nancy: i appreciate your flexibility on discussing the gun control issue... i am the last one to want to take away anyone's rights; yet, like voting, they should be regarded as privileges that can be lost when people cease to be good citizens or members of society.

I do believe that some guns, ammo and delivery systems have no place in the scenario of 'defending your home, property or livelihood,' and are (literally) overkill. I'm reminded of an expression i once heard: if you shoot a hummingbird with a bazooka, you are hardly a marksman.

With gun ownership comes responsibility, and that starts by securing your weapons so that the irresponsible, deranged, etc. cannot get them... if the CT shooter's (i will never say his name) mom had done the right thing in this regard, we might have avoided this tragedy, including her own death.

To introduce another flavor into the soup, I'm also of the belief that we need to look at the role of the NRA... there is a list on the open secrets site which lists all the politicians who took money from this lobby; a lobby which i regard as nothing less than an enabler of death. This is the link: http://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/recips.php?id=D000000082&type=P&cycle=2012&state&sort=N
The list covers the 2012 campaign cycle and goes back to 1990... while the individual contributions are not extremely large, what is stunning to me is how many politicians are on the list--heavily tilted towards Republicans, but by no means exclusively... no surprise is that your congressman, Chris Gibson, is on the list for $2,500 in the last election.

Given recent events, wouldn't it be relevant for citizens to flood his office with the demand that he publicly return this money, and further pledge publicly that he will not see them in his office going forward? I am sure Congressman Gibson wouldn't entertain a crack kingpin or terrorist organization; in my opinion there is no difference.

Finally, good luck on the Con Law papers. American Govt was my major, so do not hesitate to knock on my door if you want me to read them over.

Why do you hate men so much? And I'll give you an answer to the "Where do they get the guns?" question in the Sandy Hook example.

Umm.... His mother.

What ever happened to that Muslim doctor that shot all those 45 soldiers at fort hood in 2009 after yelling allau ackbar.
He was reported by everyone about his comments against the USA and the government still let him on base.
Now all these people have to live with their problems and pains because the government called this Workplace Violence and not a conflict,
Now this POS sits in prison demanding he has rights, why is that,he killed millitary personel,Why is he still alive????
The reason is because it was an terrorist act on American soil and the government can't admit to that...
Look it p on youtube and see the damage he did.....
